Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a psychotherapy approach developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan in the late 1980s, initially to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT has since proven effective for various mental health conditions. It blends cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness strategies, emphasizing acceptance and change. DBT operates on the dialectical principle, balancing opposing forces, such as self-acceptance and self-improvement. It helps individuals identify and regulate their emotions, manage distress, improve interpersonal relationships, and develop coping skills. Central to DBT is the concept of four skill modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Through a combination of individual therapy, group skills training, phone coaching, and therapist consultation teams, DBT equips individuals with practical tools to navigate life's challenges and find a balance between self-acceptance and personal growth.
